Landmark paper on IoT Spectrum, Kiwis feature strongly at Asia Pacific Smart Cities Awards

Welcome to our June 2019 update on what’s happening with IoT in New Zealand and around the world.

NZ IoT Alliance Council nominations close next Wednesday, 12 June
Firstly, a reminder that nominations for the NZ IoT Alliance Executive Council are currently open. All New Zealand IoT Alliance member organisations can nominate a representative. This is your chance to be involved in shaping the future direction of Aotearoa’s IoT sector! Submit your nomination using the online form here. The deadline for nominations is 5pm on Wednesday 12 June. Online elections will follow and the new Council will be announced at our Annual Meeting on Tuesday 9 July. Please register if you want to attend the Annual Meeting.

NZ IoT Alliance produces landmark paper for the future
The NZ IoT Alliance’s Spectrum Working Group has produced a landmark paper highlighting the importance of IoT spectrum for New Zealand. Congratulations to all of the working group members who have contributed; the project was led by the Working Group Chair Adam Tommy of Kordia. Radio spectrum is a key enabling component of New Zealand’s IoT networks – this new work by the IoT Alliance highlights what needs to be considered regarding IoT spectrum and should help speed up allocation of spectrum and uptake of IoT.

IoT featured strongly at Techweek19
This year’s Techweek19 programme ran successfully with over 550 events held up and down New Zealand. Hopefully you managed to get along to an IoT event or two. If you missed out you can still catch up on TechweekTV.

In particular, the IoT Auckland meetup group held a two day hackathon during Techweek. The topic was climate change so the teams brainstormed several applications using IoT systems to monitor the environment and help us to adapt to life on a changing planet.

Smarter Cities
With the majority of the world’s population now living in cities, how does technology improve the quality of life and efficient delivery of services? The World Economic Forum explores the issues and opportunities in this comprehensive infographic: The Anatomy of a Smart City.

Meanwhile, four New Zealand projects were named as finalists in IDC’s Asia Pacific Smart Cities Awards. Congratulations to the project teams from SparkNew Zealand Police and Smudge AppsVector and Soul Machines; and Wellington City Council. Jefferson King, IDC New Zealand market analyst, said “New Zealand has consistently punched above its weight in the five years that these awards have been running.” At the last IoT Alliance Council meeting we discussed how the IoT Alliance can help to advance New Zealand’s Smart Cities ecosystem – let us know your ideas!

As always, please share your New Zealand IoT news with us and make sure you follow us on TwitterFacebook and LinkedIn to keep up to date.

Ngā mihi nui,

The team at the NZ IoT Alliance
