Welcome to our August 2019 update on what’s happening with IoT in New Zealand and around the world.
IoT Alliance’s Inaugural Annual Meeting
We held our first Annual Meeting on 9 July where we had the chance to reflect on the past year and discuss the IoT Alliance’s plans for 2019-2020.
We achieved significant momentum across the IoT connect, promote, and advance focus areas in the last year. In particular, the landmark paper on spectrum available in New Zealand for IoT Systems, and the collaborative pilot with MBIE and the Foundation for Arable Research on the impact of IoT across the arable farming sector in New Zealand.
The IoT Alliance will continue to focus and identify industry and sector areas that deliver benefits to New Zealand by harnessing the power of IoT. Industry 4.0 / Industrial IoT is one of these areas that the Alliance is currently focusing on, and upcoming events and forums will address hurdles and opportunities to our members and the wider community.
New IoT Executive Council members elected
Congratulations to the new Executive Council members who were announced at the Annual Meeting:
- Russell Craig (Microsoft) – Major corporate
- Angelique Grieve (SAS) – Other corporate
- Warrick Johnston (Zag) – Other corporate
- John McDermott (BoatSecure) – SME
Kriv Naicker (Synaptec) has been appointed as the Chair of the Executive Council.

New Zealand projects win at IDC Smart City Awards
Three New Zealand projects recently took the top honours at the 2019 IDC Smart City Awards:
- Virtual Wellington, by Wellington City Council, won the Civic Engagement Award for their virtual reality version of Wellington which immerses people in a 3D city experience and allows them to interact with city data to understand urban issues and futures.
- Will Digital Teach, by Vector Ltd, won the Education Award. Will is a digital teacher for Auckland schools connected to Vector electrical network. Will’s purpose is to educate children about energy and its role in New Zealand society. The project utilises AI combined with a digital human face to humanize Will, as well as to provide an interactive interface.
- Madden Street, by Auckland Council and Auckland Transport, won the Sustainable Infrastructure Award. Madden Street utilises IoT technology to display how 5G will impact the way citizens interact with technology on a daily basis through the installation of sensors in rubbish bins, car park spaces, street lights, pavements and air monitors.
