Kia ora,
IoT continued to drive interesting discussions at the recent Mobile World Congress 2023 event in Barcelona. Three key themes were identified:
Evolving from Mobile IoT to Massive IoT to build sustainable long-term solutions for customersSustainable and secure large scale IoT solutions in the energy and environment sectorEmerging innovation enabling better global coverage and value for customers.
A key discussion forum was held on climate crisis and energy issues, with IoT ecosystem players discussing strategies and deployments that will help reduce the need for fossil fuels and damage to the environment.
The increasing 5G and IoT synergetic relationship was also keenly discussed. IoT ecosystem players presented new cellular technologies in the 5G era with innovative business models, and discussed how IoT data is being used to save money, time and resources.
Another area hotly presented and discussed is ABIOT (AI, Blockchain and IOT), particularly the foundational role of IoT. Discussions revolved around how IoT plays an important role in collecting data through sensors – how AI builds on this and takes on the responsibility of ‘thinking’ by analysing the large data sets generated by IoT, and how blockchain is ensuring secure and transparent record-keeping to enable transactions.
The New Zealand IoT Alliance is well aligned to these key global themes, trends and discussions, particularly ABIOT, and will continue to explore context and opportunity around how IoT is driving solutions around our climate crisis.

LocationTech
We’re happy to welcome LocationTech as a branded working group under the IoT Alliance, led by our very own executive director, Alison Mackie.
LocationTech’s mission is to ensure Aotearoa is well-positioned to reap the transformative benefits of location-enabled innovation. Location technology, when employed alongside other technology like IoT devices and artificial intelligence, provides the means to generate giant leaps in utility, capability and performance.
We’re excited to support their work, and if you would like to become a member (free for all IoT Alliance members) or get involved in the branded working group, please get in touch with our team.
What’s Happening at IoT Alliance?
Ledger of Things Working Group
Last year we launched the first volume on our series of whitepapers, investigating the use-cases of blockchain decentralised ledgers alongside IoT devices. This first volume covers water and supply chain logistics. Thank you to everyone who attended our webinar and added their great insights to this innovative collaboration of technology.
We are currently planning our second volume in the series, which will cover cyber-security, human movement data, and digital identity. If you would like to be seen as a thought-leader and contribute to our next volume, please reach out to our team.
TechWeek
It’s starting to get to that time of year again! TechWeek23 is taking place 10-20 May, where we’ll be kicking off the first year of the Tomorrow Expo. If you would like to showcase your work and secure a spot, you can find all the information here.
If you are planning on hosting an event during TechWeek that focuses on either IoT devices or location technology, make sure to let us know and we’ll help support you.
