IoT plays pivotal role in addressing climate adaptation | IoT News

Late last month, we hosted our kick-off webinar for the year, ‘Climate Adaptation and Transforming Urban Environments with IoT’, led by Malcolm Fraser, the lead of our Cities Working Group, alongside Kris Villanueva Libunao, a digital government and smart city advisor from the Philippines. During the session, they highlighted the pivotal role IoT plays in addressing the dual challenges of urban development and climate adaptation, and discussed the urgent need for innovative solutions to enhance urban resilience against climate change.

The essential function of IoT in collecting critical data has the means to revolutionise infrastructure resilience, public safety, and sustainability efforts. It is something the industry consistently champions – the notion that capturing real-time data equips city planners and policymakers with the tools needed to make strategic decisions that anticipate and mitigate the impacts of climate change, both from an urban planning perspective and in disaster response.

Drawing from Kris’ experience from the Philippines, she expanded on the global perspective on the vulnerabilities and solutions in coastal urban environments. The parallels drawn between New Zealand and the Philippines reinforced the global nature of these challenges and the universal applicability of IoT solutions.

The discussion from both our speakers and audience showed an underlying urgency of adopting IoT and data-driven solutions for climate adaptation and urban resilience. As we face increasing environmental uncertainties, the role of technology in shaping sustainable and livable cities is ever-growing in its necessity.
