NZ IoT: Change is Coming

Kia ora,

Welcome to our August Newsletter!

This month, I’m spotlighting two major developments that may impact New Zealand IoT device manufacturers and users.

First, the EU Data Act, coming into force in stages from 12 September 2025, will have broad implications for Kiwi IoT device manufacturers exporting to, or operating within, the EU market. The new regulation mandates significantly greater data transparency, user access, and data portability features, requiring manufacturers to consider how data is collected, managed, and able to be shared. The Act’s reach isn’t limited to manufacturers – any organisation in New Zealand dealing in data-connected products or “related services” for the EU will face new regulatory obligations and potential penalties for non-compliance, making early preparation essential.

Second, New Zealand’s nationwide 3G network shutdown commences on 31 December 2025, with the last providers shutting down their network by 31 March 2026. This shutdown marks the end for any devices reliant on 3G, affecting not only IoT manufacturers but also businesses, emergency alert systems, and rural applications still tied to the legacy network. The transition poses operational risks and upgrade costs for firms clinging to outdated hardware, but it also opens opportunities to leverage the performance and connectivity advantages of 4G and 5G infrastructure.

Both shifts demand planning and investment but can also be a springboard for innovation in connectivity and compliance.
