LocationTech NZ

Celebrating location and sharing our story

Since our last newsletter, there have been a couple of prominent elections.   While there is little comparison between ours, here in New Zealand and the United States of America, both heralded change.

The location technology industry bids  haere rā to Eugenie Sage and says haere mai to Hon Damien O’Connor as the Minister for Land Information.  The new minister holds responsibility for the ‘system for managing land titles, geodetic and cadastral survey systems, topographic information, hydrographic information, managing Crown property, and decision-making around foreign ownership of sensitive land and business assets’.

We look forward to working with the Minister, who is also the Minister for Agriculture,  Biosecurity, Rural Communities and Trade and Export Growth.  Each of these ministerial portfolios and their respective industries could benefit from a healthy dose of Location Technology.

Advocating and lobbying is part of our remit at LocationTech and subsequently we hope to have good dialog with the Minister and his department.  We will start the dialogue by sharing our passion for LocationTech through the numerous events being held as part of GIS Day 2020 on 18 November.

Thanks to the organisations who let us know of your GIS Day 2020 plans. Our friends at Eagle Technologies, in partnership with the New Zealand Esri User Group (NZEUG) have a number of events in Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch.  Abley is running an event in Tauranga. Gisborne District Council, alongside the NZEUG  is running an event for school children in Gisborne and Boffa Miskell is running a Quiz Night in Auckland.  If you are hosting an event, we wish you all the best and hope it goes well!

Finally, please join us and celebrate the launch of LocationTech on 3 December in Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch.

Ngā mihi

Chris Morris
Deputy Chairperson
