Internet of Things to monitor Christchurch sewer network

###

Great to see Christchurch City Council in partnership with Visionstream (Ventia) deploying low cost IoT to monitor and manage their sewage system. This solution is already resulting in significant operational improvements and cost savings. A real gritty IoT application delivering significant benefits to the people of Christchurch.

Ventia has been awarded the contract to design, build and install three vacuum sewer monitoring systems for Christchurch City Council (CCC).

Our Vianet team will design a customised low-cost device which, after an initial proof of concept trial, will be installed on three vacuum sewer systems in Christchurch to provide real time monitoring across 1,483 chambers.

The works are to improve the operational performance of the vacuum sewer systems installed as part of the Christchurch earthquake recovery project.

The new system will allow CCC to better monitor and manage their assets by providing real-time data on location and fault type, providing timely correction of performance issues and reduce community disruption.

What are we doing?

We’ll be designing, manufacturing and installing small battery power devices across CCC’s vacuum sewer systems. The devices will communicate data on a regular basis on the performance of vacuum sewer valves and send an alarm on detection of anomalies in the network.

Our scope of works includes:

  • design and prototyping of a bespoke sensor solution
  • installation and testing of the devices
  • building management dashboards and a callout system for field response.

The device is battery powered and designed to have a field life of greater than ten years on a single battery, providing a low cost and low maintenance solution for CCC.

Our Vianet business has completed similar works at Kurnell, in Sydney’s south for client Sydney Water. The Kurnell Remote Vacuum Monitoring System is currently being tested by our client.

The proof of concept trial is currently underway, with sensors expected to be installed by early 2019.
